Canada/Kapuskasing "Model City" Celebrates 100 Years

On January 8, a 100 by 100-foot outdoor skating rink at Riverside Park was opened. This was not the first celebration.
In September, the organization unveiled the logo and, in partnership with Timmins microbrewery Full Beard Brewing, sold a lager - 705 - with a label that commemorated the anniversary of the northern city.
New every month
A calendar of events from January to March should be published shortly.
In addition to upcoming special events, the organizing committee intends to launch locally made products at least once a month. The organization is committed to local products and local manufacturing - games, clothing, wood products and household items.
For example, in December, the committee sold gloves knitted by Kapuskoise Nicole Dufour, with the centenary logo on a leather ring. A sale of vests is also planned.
Local Gastronomy
Local restaurants also contribute. Each month, one of them will offer a speciality for the centenary. For January, Topper's Pizza offers a mushroom, pepperoni and bacon pizza, the "100th special".
"We want to encourage people to go to local businesses," explains municipal councillor Julien Boucher, who is involved in the festivities committee. It's another way to get people out."
The centennial will serve as a pretext to encourage the local economy, especially in the context of repeated confinements.
A redesigned party
The centenary will take place on April 8, the day the city was incorporated. The launch of the festivities is scheduled to take place on the same day. The event will not have the proportions initially planned, "even less if a confinement is prolonged," says Julien Boucher.
According to the city councillor, "it is certain that it will be restricted and that a good part of it will be virtual. But we have something special on April 8."
The pandemic has forced the committee to rethink everything and may well force it to review everything. So far, reorganization and planning is going well. However, other provincial or regional confinements may have a more significant impact, especially from April onward.
"It's fun to be able to do things differently and have to come up with new ideas," says Julien Boucher, who wants to see the glass half full. He admits that the committee has almost had to make a clean slate.
"It's been a tough transition period. We had to drop a lot of things we wanted to do. I think we're going to do well in spite of everything," he concludes, optimistic.
Kapuskasing, the model city
On April 8, 1921, Kapuskasing was born. It was incorporated, "according to certain agreements between the government and the Spruce Falls Limited company," which had committed itself "to certain major operations. But why is Kapuskasing called the "model town of the North"?
It's a matter of planning. Kapuskasing was planned and designed at the initiative of the provincial government, not at the will of one company, and that's the difference.
The goal was to make it a model town to avoid the development of single-industry towns, closed in on themselves. The development of Kapuskasing would have inspired the development of Manitouwadge.
